(More customer reviews)I own two pairs of these shoes, purchased before the switch to the Dominican Republic manufacturing facility.
They do seem about half a size small if I'm wearing them with socks. Typically you don't wear boat shoes with socks but I can't stand going sockless so I use the loafer liners sold here on Amazon and they are great. With these liners on in place of socks, the sizing seems more in line with what I expect and I wonder if AE hasn't taken this into consideration when they size these shoes.
They are quite stiff for something that's supposed to be so casual and comfortable. The tradeoff I suppose is that they appear as though they'll last for years and they are recraftable I believe. At least they were advertised as such when I bought my US made pairs. I sped up the break in period by slipping five or six pairs of athletic socks on my shoe trees and leaving them in the shoes for several weeks to stretch. After that I would either only wear them on short excursions or I would take an extra pair of shoes with me so I could change them out once they started hurting my feet. And believe me, they will. After about a year they are now at a point where they are actually quite comfortable and fit my foot like a glove. I can also say that they still look brand new even after my tromping through all manner of things and generally abusing them in my attempts to soften them up and make them mine so to speak.
If you're looking for something that you can throw on right out of the box and walk all day in I would say look elsewhere but if you're willing to put in a little effort, they can wind up being rather nice. I love the styling and the construction is what you would expect from AE assuming the quality of the DR mfg house is up to snuff. I suppose the fact that I bought a second pair after owning the first pair for six months says something, but my willingness to go through the break in on a second pair was based on the fact that I was in theory supporting American jobs and American manufacturing. Now that the production of these shoes has moved offshore with no corresponding drop in MSRP I don't know that I would make the same decision again.
